Kasterlee
active recreation in a green environment » walking
walking

In Kasterlee you have the opportunity to walk from junction to junction. It’s an initiative from Kasterlee, Herentals and Retie.

Three communities in the Antwerp Campine region set up a network of knots to create marked routes of a Total of 250 km in the area, most of which are shorter trails (2-10 km) suitable for one-day excursions. The range of combinations possible in this network offers an opportunity for extended hiking for the whole weekend. The tracks are located in safe environments with low or no traffic.

Each junction in the network has a number, which hikers can use to prepare a tour (working out a precise plan of the tracks and routes to follow) and visit areas and places they like. The map shows the distance of each track between two knots, as well as information about environment and road conditions. The landscape is dominated by rugged pine forests and rural areas. Marked, signposted hiking trails span a total length of 250 km (in one way).

Typical of the area are rugged sand dunes on the one hand, and the intricate and delicate beauty of clear-watered lakes, brooks and streams or small rivers (Nete) in a region without industrial activity the region is an excellent holiday centre for families with children, offering them a chance to take part in various leisure activities  in nature; hiking, cycling, fishing and canoeing. There are plenty of possible routes for hikers, offering suitable options for one-day excursions or longer hikes.

Be sure to study the map before setting off on a trip and draw up a list of intersections you wish to cross through. Just count the total distance and estimate the time you will need for the tour. Mind the signs in between two knots, they point to the next chosen number (in case you get confused). The arrows you will find, indicate the direction to the number you have chosen and in the opposite direction they point to the number you chose last.

Signs indicate all major tourist attractions and facilities, which you will also find on the map. The attached guide in Dutch tells you more about the region but don’t worry; in pubs, restaurants and hotels people mostly speak English. Discover this area of 15.000 hectares and take the opportunity to hike along marked routes as much as you wish. The region is famous for its camping and hotel facilities.  Cosy pubs and restaurants are available all through the neighbourhood. Enjoy your trip!
